Assessment and Reporting

St Gabriel's students participate in the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) The National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assesses Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 students across the nation in literacy and numeracy. The literacy assessment tasks measure student achievement in reading, writing and language conventions. The numeracy assessment task measures student achievement in number; algebra; function and pattern; measurement; chance and data; and space.

"The purpose of NAPLAN testing: NAPLAN results add value to teacher assessment and reporting by showing how their students' achievement compares to a wider group of students across the state and across Australia. It is important to remember that the results reflect each student's performance at a single point in time." -VCAA

We report to parents on children’s learning progress with a written report at mid and end of the year. This report contains assessment of student's achievement in each of the learning areas. It also contains a section for each student to comment on their ability to achieve their individual learning goals. Attendance at school will also be recorded. The achievement ratings are as follows:
A - Well above the expected level at this time of year
B - Above the expected level at this time of year
C - At the expected standard at this time of year
D - Below the expected standard at this time of year
E - Well below the standard at this time of year
Only those students who are working beyond the standards of their year level receive an A or B. The children who are working at the expected level will receive a C grading.

While parents are encouraged to meet with teachers when the need arises, there are two formal occasions scheduled where parents can book a time online to meet with their child's teacher:

Parent/Teacher meetings - February

Student led conferences - June
